(00:00:08):
Legendary makeup artist Ve Neill created the iconic looks in the original 1988 Beetlejuice,
(00:00:14):
directed by everyone's favorite purveyor of goth antiheroes,
(00:00:18):
Tim Burton.
(00:00:19):
Ve recounts her first meeting on the lot with the young director that led her to
(00:00:23):
getting hired for the bizarre and hilarious cult classic that became Beetlejuice,
(00:00:28):
starring Michael Keaton,
(00:00:29):
Winona Ryder,
(00:00:30):
Alec Baldwin,
(00:00:31):
Gina Davis,
(00:00:32):
and Catherine O'Hara.
(00:00:33):
Okay, Vee, come on in.
(00:00:36):
So I get there and it's on the lot at the Culver City Studios,
(00:00:40):
that little tiny lot that looks like gone with the wind from the front.
(00:00:44):
Yeah.
(00:00:44):
And they are in this shitty old broken down production trailer.
(00:00:48):
And I'm thinking, oh, God, this really is a low budget movie.
(00:00:51):
And there was this board up on the wall that had these like little pencil sketches
(00:00:56):
on it of some creepy looking dude,
(00:00:58):
you know?
(00:00:58):
Yeah.
(00:00:58):
Okay.
(00:00:59):
Okay.
(00:01:00):
And so he said, okay, you can go in and talk to Tim.
(00:01:02):
So I walked in the room and here's this scruffy kid with his hair all over the place,
(00:01:09):
sticking out everywhere in a rumpled up white shirt.
(00:01:11):
And I thought, wow, I thought, well, he is an artsy fartsy type, so I guess it's okay.
(00:01:21):
So we just started talking and we kind of hit it off.
(00:01:24):
I thought, and I thought, well, this is good.
(00:01:25):
This was a good first meeting.
(00:01:27):
Their amazing collaboration led to the iconic Beetlejuice.
(00:01:31):
Green hair, a stinky old wig, the white makeup, moss growing out of the neck.
(00:01:37):
Ve sent a PA to the hobby store to buy fake moss.
(00:01:40):
And V says.
(00:01:42):
And I went and I sent a runner to go to a hobby store and get me some ground up foam,
(00:01:47):
colored foam and some moss and stuff.
(00:01:50):
And I said, this guy comes out of a grave.
(00:01:52):
We want him to look like he just crawled out from underneath a stone.
(00:01:56):
So that's when I put all the moss, like he had moss growing out and everything.
(00:02:01):
And Tim goes, oh, my God.
(00:02:03):
He said, OK, that's good.
(00:02:04):
So he wound up liking what I did.
(00:02:08):
And that was really fantastic.
(00:02:09):
And so that's how we did it.
(00:02:11):
Well,
(00:02:12):
flash forward to 2024 and the upcoming fall release of the long awaited sequel,
(00:02:17):
Beetlejuice,
(00:02:18):
that is overflowing your feed right now on IG.
(00:02:21):
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice with Michael Keaton,
(00:02:23):
Winona Ryder,
(00:02:24):
Catherine O'Hara returning alongside Jenna Ortega,
(00:02:27):
Monica Bellucci,
(00:02:29):
Justin Theroux,
(00:02:30):
and Willem Dafoe.
(00:02:31):
So he brought all his creatives back, right?
(00:02:33):
No Ve. Wait, what?
(00:02:35):
You might ask.
(00:02:36):
Yeah,
(00:02:37):
I said no V.
(00:02:38):
Today's episode will delve into her amazing work,
(00:02:40):
which won an Oscar,
(00:02:42):
on your favorite movie.
(00:02:43):
And I might ask you, how or why didn't she come back for the sequel?
(00:02:47):
I do happen to know that she was not asked.
(00:02:50):
I, for one, already have my tickets to see Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.
(00:02:53):
Of course, I will do my due diligence.
(00:02:56):
Now,
(00:02:57):
I'm the biggest Tim Burton fan from Pee-wee's Great Adventure through Ed Wood and
(00:03:01):
Edward Scissorhands,
(00:03:02):
which all had V.
(00:03:03):
Neal on them.
(00:03:05):
Need I say more?
(00:03:06):
But early reviews and fan feedback on social are saying, on the nice side, this is Beetle Burton.
(00:03:13):
A strong dose on Tim.
(00:03:14):
Light on Beetlejuice original vibes.
(00:03:17):
Many fans are saying some stronger things like, did anyone bother to watch the original?
(00:03:21):
And what is up with the makeup?
(00:03:24):
Now,
(00:03:24):
I couldn't help but wonder if V not being on the crew,
(00:03:28):
V being so intrinsic to the creation of Beetlejuice,
(00:03:31):
made the sequel a little less innovative.
(00:03:33):
I've heard that the 4K Netflix budget bonanza vibe feels like a far cry from
(00:03:38):
sending a PA to the hobby store to buy a train set moss to glue on my...
(00:03:42):
What do we think?
(00:03:43):
Ageism?
(00:03:44):
V is 73.
(00:03:45):
70 is the new 50.
(00:03:47):
Not buying that.
(00:03:48):
V is Johnny Depp's personal makeup and hairstylist on a billion films we all know
(00:03:52):
and love and are award-winning,
(00:03:54):
and also frequently works with director Tim Burton.
(00:03:57):
She was a makeup artist on Beetlejuice,
(00:03:59):
Edward Scissorhands,
(00:04:00):
Batman Returns,
(00:04:02):
Ed Wood,
(00:04:02):
Mars Attacks,
(00:04:03):
Sweeney Todd,
(00:04:04):
all of which were directed by Burton.
(00:04:06):
She won Oscars for her work on Beetlejuice and Ed Wood.
(00:04:08):
Okay, so what happened?
(00:04:11):
I'll be interested in your comments, pre- and post-film.
(00:04:14):
What do we think?
(00:04:15):
V has been mum's the word,
(00:04:16):
class act as always,
(00:04:18):
but I have a feeling that Tim might have just overlooked his key collaborator,
(00:04:21):
and that might have cost him making a truly original sequel.
(00:04:24):
On Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on IMDb, I counted 36 hair and makeup department crew.
(00:04:29):
And of course, I'm the HMU department's champion.
(00:04:32):
I love all artists, so I don't want to speak ill of who replaced me.
(00:04:37):
I just want to know why and how that went down.
(00:04:40):
It looks like a very complex group of HMU prosthetics,
(00:04:43):
wig makers,
(00:04:44):
personal makeup artists,
(00:04:45):
etc.,
(00:04:45):
all very famous and skilled for the record.
(00:04:48):
Maybe things just got too big, too complex.
(00:04:51):
The original seems like a band of misfits who created a truly original film,
(00:04:55):
an unforgettable version of the afterlife.
(00:04:57):
Dancing shrimp,
(00:04:58):
Winona Ryder's Lydia,
(00:05:00):
we love her,
(00:05:01):
we dress up like her for Halloween,
(00:05:03):
and the lovably gross,
(00:05:04):
obscene dead party guy hankering Geena Davis.
(00:05:08):
Beetlejuice.
(00:05:09):
I wonder if Tim felt like, I can't ask V because I have to hire 35 other people to execute my ideas.
(00:05:14):
I mean, that's one theory.
(00:05:16):
Well, Tim, I wonder if sometimes one is better.
(00:05:20):
I don't know.
(00:05:20):
We'll see when it comes out.
(00:05:22):
Beetlejuice is dropping on the 6th of September, and I want to know what you think.
Bite-sized deep dives into some of my favorite hair, makeup, and style moments in film history.
